Bubble Gum and Rob Machado Roll Out New Organik Wax Blend

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 15 October, 2009 : - - The recent Rob Machado Surf Experience and Green Expo held in September at Seaside Reef in Cardiff provided the inspiration for Rob’s Organik Blend (ROB), a new ocean-friendly biodegradable wax developed by Bubble Gum Surf Wax.

“We had been experimenting with a few different organic ingredients,” said Bubble Gum co-founder, Britt Galland. “So when a Green Expo was added to this year’s Rob Machado Surf Experience, we thought it would a perfect opportunity to step up our efforts and introduce an organic wax blend to our local surf community.”

Rob has been the most visible and respected supporter for Bubble Gum Surf Wax since the brand was re-introduced in 2005. “To honor that relationship, as well as Rob’s dedication to protecting our oceans and environment, we’re proud to have his name and likeness associated with our first organic blended surf wax,” Galland added. “A percentage of sales generated by Rob’s Organik Blend will be donated to The Rob Machado Foundation which supports several educational and environmental organizations.”

According to Galland, even the packaging for ROB is all about being green. The label consists of recycled brown paper that bears the Responsible Forestry logo. Taking the green theme even further, it’s printed with soy based ink — on presses powered by clean Wind-generated energy.

Rob’s Organik Blend will gain wide exposure during the premier showings of Machado’s new film, The Drifter. Warner Bros. has ordered 3,000 bars of ROB to hand out at select movie premier venues this fall.

To complement their new organic wax blend, Bubble Gum will soon introduce an all-natural surf wax remover. Bubble Gum Wax Remover is a special formulation of food grade citrus byproducts that effectively removes residual surf wax, adhesive, and tar – with absolutely no toxic chemicals. The new wax remover, which will be available for purchase in November at Bubble Gum’s online store, features a convenient spray bottle and has a pleasant, natural lemon-citrus scent.

DEL MAR, CA., (September 18, 2009)— An all-star lineup of shapers, craftsman, designers & manufacturers will take over San Diego for the third annual Del Mar Sacred Craft Surf Expo at the Del Mar Fairgrounds on Saturday and Sunday, October 10th and 11th.

The complete list of over 100 shapers and exhibitors is listed on the website at http://www.sacredcraftexpo.com/exhibitors.html.

Sacred Craft Surf Expo 2009 has something for everyone from board demo's to seminars to artwork to music. One of this years' main attraction is the Vintage Surfboard Antique Road Show event, taking place on Saturday October 10th from 10am - 1pm.

"We are urging surfers to dig through their garages, their storage space, and their backyards for collectable surfboards and magazines that they think may hold some real value," explained expo director Scott Bass. "Anything special and unique from say, 1985 or so and earlier, especially if it is in good shape, probably has value above and beyond normal used-board pricing. Our expert appraisers can determine a estimated value."

Special events are being planned around and during the Sacred Craft Expo weekend. First off, make sure to get down to 15th St. for the TransWorld SURF Sacred Craft Magical Morning Board Demo, just down the street from the expo. The general surfing public is invited to 15th St. reef in Del Mar on Saturday October 10th from 7am - 10am. Come on down and try out boards and wetsuits from Sacred Craft exhibitors.

The Sacred Craft Surf Expo opens its doors immediately following the TransWorld SURF Sacred Craft Magical Morning Board Demo.

You will want to be at the expo early! The first 100 attendees in the door will be put in a special "early bird" drawing for a brand new Firewire fish surfboard. Great odds! And no wonder, just a few doors down from the DM racetrack!

Musicians will play on the outdoors stage all weekend long. Various groups are scheduled including Australian longboard champion Beau Young, Miles Kinney & Tower 7, a YardBirds cover band; the acoustic stylings of Kevin White; and Future Fins brand ambassador Phil 'Boo' Stubbs.

On Saturday Oct 10, make sure to stay around and check out a special SACRED CRAFT premier screening of the new Australian documentary film "SEARCHING FOR MICHAEL PETERSON".

A special invite-only VIP birthday reception for Tribute to the Masters Shape-off honoree Dick Brewer is being planned for October 3rd at Wade Koniakowsky's Ocean Art Gallery. More information to be revealed as it becomes available.

In addition to all of this, Sacred Craft seminars run all weekend long at the Sacred Craft Surf Expo. On the docket are Drew Brophy's inspirational slide show and spray paint demonstration; an epoxy laminating demonstration by Dave Daum; UCSD's Stephanie Moyerman discusses feminine physique and surfboard design for women; Lee Vanderhurst professes on surfboard design 101 during "The Idiot's Guide to Surfboard Design". A Multi-media and hands-on guide to the basics in surfboard design from outline to rocker, how to measure it and what it does. Know how your surfboard should work before you catch your first wave; UCSD's Benjamin Thomson talks about natural frequency (recoil rate) of a surfboard and why it is important to you!; Whitney Guild will present Turn Up The Volume! and discuss the importance of knowing the volume of each of the surfboards in your quiver. VOLUME is rarely discussed, but is an important single number that can be used to describe each of your boards; and the Groundswell Society discusses apex predators and their role in surfboard design. A complete schedule will be available shortly.

Team USA wins gold

AUGUST 09 2009

It was a fitting end to an event steeped in a mix of camaraderie and tough competition as Team USA took the overall gold medal today over Team France at the Billabong ISA World Surfing Games in fine surf at Playa Hermosa.

It was the first time that the Americans have won an overall gold medal in since the 1996 World Surfing Games in Huntington Beach. From the opening heats of the Games at Playa Hermosa that began eight days ago, Team USA appeared committed and focused, as they competed against 34 other teams for a spot on the podium.

With the final day of competition looming overhead, Team USA stood firm and was able to place five or their eight team members into the three finals, hence becoming the team to beat.

The team was led by Ian Cairns who assumed the position as Coach less than one month ago. "We had good surfers and what we did was to stay very concentrated," said a low-key Cairns. "This is a long event and it was very important to preserve your energy."

"I am really very happy" said Cairns of the first American title in more than a decade. "My goal was to come here and win. But also I wanted to establish a different personality for American surfing. I didn't want to make a lot of noise until things were happening. We built the support, the calmness and we focused on being together and concentrating on doing things well. Later, at the final, we went to the beach to wave the flag."

+++ FINAL Team Results: GOLD - United States - 14910 points SILVER - France - 13280 points BRONZE - Australia - 10996 points COPPER - Hawaii - 10856 points

Slater Leads Rebel Tour

AUGUST 04 2009

NINE-TIME world surfing champion American Kelly Slater is backing a rebel pro-surfing tour that will start as early as next year, with or without the support of the sport's existing sponsors and administrators. The breakaway world surfing competition has the potential to affect broadcast rights, sponsorships, advertising and significantly boost the earnings of the world's best surfers.

Organisers of the rebel tour - Slater's manager Terry Hardy and former American boxing promoter Matt Tinley - have an in-principle agreement with US pay television sports network ESPN to broadcast it and claim to have enough financial backing to get the tour running without the imprimatur of the surf industry or peak surfing body, the Association of Surfing Professionals.

"In a year there is a possibility that there will be two world champions, but obviously that's not what we want to happen," Quiksilver International event director Rod Brooks says. Quiksilver, a surf clothing company, is Slater's long-time sponsor and has been involved in developing the rebel tour for at least the past month.

Early this month Quiksilver chief executive Bob McKnight summoned leaders of other surf labels to meet Hardy in California, to inform them of the rebel tour and invite them to be involved. According to various reports, Hardy told the meeting the tour would proceed whether they supported him or not.

ASP chief executive Brodie Carr waited three weeks before he could get a meeting with Hardy, which happened this week in Los Angeles. Carr is not saying what was discussed but one rumour in the surfing world suggests Hardy was bullish about his ability to steal the sport away from the ASP. Other sources say the rebels have employed a team of lawyers to head off any legal challenge from the ASP.

Brett Simpson Wins $100k

JULY 30 2009

Brett Simpson chose to be a surfer, which isn't what you expect your son to choose as a career, but it was OK with his father, Bill, who supported the family with his earnings from a nine-year career as an NFL safety.

On Sunday, Brett won the U.S. Open of Surfing in his hometown, Huntington Beach. But just for good measure, his father fielded questions about his son's career decision just moments after Brett's victory. More specifically, if he had had a choice, which sport would he have preferred for his son?

"Uhhh, surfing!" his father said, dangling his son's oversized check.

"We'll take the hundred grand."

Perhaps the record purse prompted his response, but after Sunday, it seems no one would have objected to Simpson's decision to pursue surfing. Except for Mick Fanning.

The 28-year-old Australian failed to post higher scores than Simpson on any wave in the men's final Sunday.

"He might want to punch me now," Simpson said jokingly. "He's such a good competitor, and he took it real good. And I'm sure he's [mad], but at the same time he said he's stoked for me. So I'm stoked."

Simpson cobbled together a combined score of 16.93 off his second and third waves (7.83 and 9.10, respectively).

Fanning peaked early, scoring his best, 5.00 and 7.50, in the first two waves, and failed to score anything better after that.

The door essentially opened for Simpson when Adriano de Souza upset nine-time ASP world champion Kelly Slater in the quarterfinals.

"It's sudden death here, so if you don't go out and perform for that 25 minutes, you're done," Slater, who was favored to win the tournament, said afterward.

"I just didn't do what I had to do."

Fanning eliminated de Souza to advance to the men's final and didn't seem too disappointed about finishing in second place.

"Making the final was a big bonus for me," he said smiling. "You know, I had $100,000 worth of fun anyway."

Simpson's victory was not short of story lines. His father, who was a second-round pick in the 1974 NFL draft and spent five seasons with the Los Angeles Rams, said he didn't pressure his son to choose between football and surfing because that would have been a difficult fight.

"Once he got into surfing, he committed himself to it," Bill said.

"And once I saw that, I didn't feel that he should go anywhere else but there. Because he had really committed himself to that 100% . . . today is kind of the crowning moment of that."

At 13, his father brought him to Huntington Beach for the first time, adding more significance to his victory Sunday.

"It's been my lifelong dream to be on this podium," Brett, 24, said.

"To do it at home, it was like . . . there's not that many words that I can describe it. My body like wants to break out.

"I'm speechless."
