DiPietro wins WSA Prime

JANUARY 20 2009

Bubble Gum Congratulates Team Rider Dominic DiPietro For Winning the WSA Prime at Steamer Lane

Perfect weather and a solid 5-8 foot-plus swell held up throughout
the weekend in Santa Cruz for the WSA Prime event, presented by “Got
Milk” at the legendary Steamer Lane. WSA Prime is an invitation-only
contest series, comprised of top amateurs, including many members of
the USA Surf Team.

Bubble Gum Surf Wax team rider, Dominic DiPietro from Carlsbad, put
together four strong heats in pumping surf en route to a big win in
the Under 18 division. The result boosted the 16-year old from 10th
to third in the Under 18 division’s overall WSA Prime season ratings
(behind Dane Zaun and Christian Arballo) with just two events to go.

“The Lane is a shifty and tricky spot,” DiPietro said. “I’m glad I
got here in time to do a free surf the day before the contest. This
is huge win for me and I’m super stoked.”

BUBBLE GUM RIDER, CHRISTIAN SAENZ FINISHES THIRD Fellow Bubble Gum rider, Christian Saenz (Huntington Beach) also made
the final, finishing in third place. Saenz now holds down the 4th
spot in the Under 18 ratings. During the see-saw final, DiPietro held
off a red hot Kolohe Andino, who had just posted an 18.26 heat total
in the Under 16 division to take the win over fellow super-groms Luke
Davis and Bubble Gum rider Ian Crane.

Saenz opened up the final with a huge 9+ score, linking multiple
hooks and snaps from the outside “middle peak” all the way to the
inside. Despite the strong start, Saenz wasn’t able to secure a
strong back-up score. Meanwhile, staying cool under pressure,
DiPietro waited patiently at “the slot,” the peak closer to the
bluff, where he tracked down two reeling righthanders that allowed
committed top to bottom turns out the back. DiPietro took the win
with a solid 15.10 heat total, over Andino (13.77), Saenz (12.83),
and Malibu’s Conrad Carr (8.07).

Kanoa Igarashi makes history!

JANUARY 13 2009

Age: 11
Hometown: Huntington Beach, Ca School: Dwyer Middle School-6th grade Sponsors: O'Neill, Spy, HSS, Java Point, Vans, Ocean & Earth, Nixon, Bubble Gum, Toyota of HB, Ratio Fin, On It, Alva Skates;

Kanoa made history at the Huntington Beach Open this past weekend, sealing his 22nd victory of the 2008-09 season and breaking the NSSA regular season wins record of 21 previously set by Cory Arrambide in 2002. And the celebrating isn't over yet for the 11-year-old super grom who became the youngest person ever to hold the record. With many events still remaining on the schedule, it is highly likely that Kanoa's hot streak will continue and his amazing win record will continue to soar.

Congrats Kanoa!!!! From the crew at Bubble Gum

Jesse Merle-Jones

JANUARY 08 2009

For being a relatively small fish in the surfing empire, Bubble Gum
Surf Wax has some highly respected pro’s representing the brand. In
addition to long-time riders Taylor Knox, Rob Machado, and Freddy
Patacchia, Bubble Gum recently added WQS stand-outs Cheyne Magnusson
from Maui and Jesse Merle-Jones, who hails from Kauai.

"I’m thankful for growing up in Hawaii. Surfing and living near the
ocean is the most amazing thing you could ask for," says Jesse.

From logging in tube time at Pipe, to ripping your average
beachbreaks, Jesse is a powerful and versatile surfer who’s had some
impressive results on the QS. Last May, he took down Sunny Garcia and
California pro’s Jason Miller (San Clemente) and Shey Yates
(Encinitas) to win the KoastalKaos.com Pro in Oceanside, California.
Jesse has also claimed the top of the podium at the Outer Banks Pro,
and the Macy’s E-Series Events at Maili Point and Turtle Bay in
recent years.

Merle-Jones has clearly proven himself as a worthy WQS competitor and
pro surfing journeyman. He leverages his compact frame and low
center of gravity to push power carves and snaps that heave as much
rail-spray as much larger surfers. Ever since he was a kid growing up
in Kauai, Jesse aspired to become a pro surfer, and now he’s living
his dream…and loving it.

If he’s not out surfing, Jesse is usually training for his next
event. In his free time he likes to fish and hang out with his ohana
in Kauai. In addition to Bubble Gum, Jesse’s sponsors include: Fox,
Smith, Wade Tokoro, Ocean and Earth and Killer Dana Surf Shop.

Cheyne Magnusson

JANUARY 03 2009

Bubble Gum is stoked to add Cheyne Magnusson to its team sponsored
surfers. The fireball pro from Maui, who happens to be Clay Marzo’s
half-brother, is featured on the cover of the current Surf Shot
magazine, stomping a stylish aerial.

Magnusson is a man of many talents. When he’s not murdering his
favorite breaks, he’s likely to be found blowing up at the skatepark,
or freediving with a big spear in pursuit of the catch of the day.
Beyond his athletic prowess, you may recognize Cheyne from his role
in the skate film “Lords of Dogtown,” or from his appearances on Maui
Fever and MTV.

Last year, Cheyne had a unique opportunity to showcase his surfing,
poker, diving, ping-pong, and Guitar Hero skills, winning the Nixon
High Tide Hold ‘Em Competition in Tavarua, Fiji. The Nixon High Tide
Hold’Em is an invitation-only event which pits some of action sports’
biggest names against each other in a series of friendly competitions.

Cheyne says he’s “psyched” to represent Bubble Gum…his favorite wax.
His surfing career is also supported by Osiris, Body Glove and Nixon.
