Rip Curl Grom Surf Comp / Hawaii

Story and pics on Surfline

CONDITIONS: It was pretty much perfect, summertime surf for a grommet contest. Oahu's top youngsters chased down ultra-coveted invites to the Finals in Puerto Rico later this year.

Hands down the guy to watch at Kewalos over the weekend. Zeke got the invite and cash prizes for the event's best maneuver and highest heat total.

Seth Moniz frustrated the 14/under and 12/under divisions, edging out Koa Smith, Kain Daly, Kaulana Apo, Imai Devault, and Noa Mizuno for double crowns.

RESULTS:

BOYS 16/under: 1. Ezekiel Lau 2. Kaoli Kahokuloa 3. Dylan Kowalski 4. Cole Yamakawa

Parko Hospitalized

JULY 08 2010

Joel Parkinson Reported Hospitalized, Out of Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay? BURLEIGH HEADS, Queensland/Australia (Friday, July 9, 2010) - As reported on Australia's Surfing Life (ASL) Magazine's website, "Minutes ago Joel Parkinson's J-Bay preparations were cut short when he went down inside one of Snapper's pits. ASL Photographer Andrew Shield was on hand documenting the session and confirmed the nasty accident. 'He tucked into a super dredgy one and just disappeared inside, then showed up bobbing around in the whitewash. He was definitely in a lot of pain. There were no rocks where he went down so he must have gotten mixed up with his board.'Shieldsy was doubtful the reigning J-Bay champ would be able to surf next week in South Africa. 'He was cut down to the bone around his ankle and calf area. He definitely wasn't walking.' Andy Irons (who broke his board hours earlier) assisted Parko up the..."

Rip Curl GromSearch

MAY 22 2010

The Rip Curl GromSearch is a worldwide series of events designed specifically for grommets. Uniformed across the Globe, the events give groms the center stage to show the world the progression of the sport.

In the US, the Rip Curl GromSearch brings the best surfers from across the nation to their local, regional competition with the hopes of making the Rip Curl National Final at the Rip Curl Pro Search Somwhere in Puerto Rico in the Fall.

With a youthful vibe, Rip Curl GromSearch allows the contestants to feel relaxed while providing them competitive experience and an atmosphere similar to a World Championship Tour event necessary for developing their budding surfing careers.

The 2010 North American series is made up of 4 regional championship events and the winners of each event advances to the National Final to compete for the title of Rip Curl GromSearch National Champion. The winner of the premier Boys and Girls 16/Under division at the National Final wins an all-expense paid trip to the Rip Curl Pro Surf & Music Festival at Bells Beach the following April to compete in the Rip Curl GromSearch International Finals!

The Rip Curl GromSearch National Finals has sent incredible surfers to compete at Bells each year including Mason Ho, Tyler Newton, Kolohe Andino, Malia Manuel, Nat Young, and Nage Melamed.

The first-ever Rip Curl GromSearch was held at Jan Juc, Torquay, Australia in 1999. This led to the creation of a National series including Europe, the United States, Brazil, South Africa, Indonesia, and New Zealand.

Stephanie Gilmore and Matt Wilkinson won the first International Final in 2004. Mason Ho beat Jordy Smith to become the first non-Australian Rip Curl GromSearch Champion in 2005. Progression has continued with big name winners over the years like Owen Wright, Sally Fitzgibbons, Gabriel Medina and Alana Blanchard.

RIP Marvin Foster

MAY 20 2010

Many surfers with memories of the ‘80s and ‘90s will be saddened to learn of the death of Marvin Foster in Hawaii this week.

Marvin, 48, was found dead by his brother Kalani on May 18. The cause of death is yet to be determined.

He was a phenomenally gifted surfer who starred in surfing’s first video production, Quiksilver’s The Performers, and made many friends as he travelled the world as a competitor on the ASP tour.

Marvin was renowned for charging perfect Pipe on a 6’10”, long before smaller boards became popular among top surfers at the break. He broke the ice by going left off the ledge at Waimea Bay on solid days, and defined the backside tube line at Backdoor with his sleek, perfectly balanced style.

In recent years his life took a darker turn and he spent some time in prison on various charges. But to his many friends Marvin remained a gem, and local surfers were distraught to learn of his death. “He had a good heart,” “He had more than a good heart. He was special.”

Marvin is survived by his daughters Tiare Marr-Foster and Zjayna Foster, brothers Daniel, Cyrus, and Kalani Foster, and sister Pua McCormick.

Gabe Kling Wins Lowers Pro

MAY 09 2010

For all the leaps that were made in modern contest surfing throughout the 6.0 Lowers Pro, the final was won with knifing rail work and solid vertical hits. For all the hundreds of air reverses that were landed at Lowers these past five days it goes to show that flat out good surfing is still cherished and able to win a major contest. Not to say that Florida’s Gabe Kling doesn’t have the bag of tricks necessary to be on Tour, because he does. But his frontside hacks and his backside straight ups were what won him the 6.0 Lowers Pro. On Saturday those left in his wake were Cory Lopez, Jordy Smith, Andy Irons, and Chris Davidson. There is not an easy heat in there. Jordy was the only surfer the entire event to put up a 10 and was consistently the top scoring surfer each day. Andy Irons surfed the best he’s surfed in a contest in years. The 3-times World Champ’s swagger and enjoyment during a heat has returned. And the argument could be made that had he not broken his board on his very first wave in the semis against Kling that the day would’ve turned out different. Andy exited the water all smiles, happy with his first semis appearance in what seems like ages. If AI can continue to do what he did at Lowers this week expect him to begin taking names on Tour.

Then of course there was Chris Davidson, who Kling left needing a 9.33 in the final. Davo’s assertive, sleek approach was quite possibly the most dialed in of all 6.0 Lowers Pro competitors. His carves were appeasing to anyone who surfs and his blow-tails and laybacks displayed perfect execution with flawless ability. The Australian is the most fired up person possibly ever. Don’t be surprised if he wins an event on Tour this year. Irony reared it’s head on the sand and cobblestones of San Onofre State Beach Saturday afternoon. For all the airs landed, the guy who was throwing the most water around on the final day garnered the win. Easily Gabe’s biggest victory of his career, it shows that a PRIME event is not won on the first, second, or even third days. Kling surfed his best on Saturday and did what he needed to do to advance during the weekdays. In an event that holds 128 surfers he said himself, “I didn’t even win a heat until it went to man-on-man. I kind of peaked at the right time.” Sometimes doing the right things at the right times can end up trumping any air one can throw.— Article courtesy of Ryan Brower/Transworld Surf Mag

Kelly Slater Wins Bells

APRIL 14 2010

Kelly Slater Wins The Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach

In less than two minutes, 9-Time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater crushed Mick Fanning’s chances of “ringing the Bell” for a third time. During their final at Johanna Beach—one that had eleven ASP World Titles involved—Slater went on a tear with ten minutes remaining, blasting a huge alley-oop air and a searing blow tail 360 to end Fanning’s chances. Surfing with a chipped bone on the top part of his right foot, the 37-year old took out California’s Bobby Martinez in the semis to set up a USA vs. Australia final. Winning the event for his fourth time, Slater tied Mark Richards for the most ever Bells Beach titles.

Of course he can play the didgeridoo... “I was surprised when my feet landed on my board after that alley oop,” said Slater of the momentum-changing move. He then passed around the huge bell trophy that Rip Curl awards the winner every year, but not before giving the trophy away to the local Aboriginal tribe, thanking them in the process for letting the contest happen on their land. And as if he hadn’t showcased his talents enough, he started jamming on the didgeridoo with the local boys…is there anything this guy can’t do?—Justin Coté, Tranworld Surf

See us at Sacred Craft

APRIL 09 2010

Surfing in all its glory will be on display this weekend as shapers sculpt the perfect surfboard, artists paint crashing waves and everyone talks about how stoked they get from the sport.

The Sacred Craft, an exposition at the Ventura County Fairgrounds on Saturday and Sunday, comes to town for the second year in a row with more than 75 surfboard shapers displaying and selling their wares.

“Basically, surfers care about two things,” said Scott Bass, the event organizer. “Those two things are waves and the equipment to ride them. We provide the equipment.”

The event is geared toward the hard-core surfer, Bass said, someone who is interested in more than just T-shirts.

There will be a handful of shapers on hand as part of the yearly “Tribute to the Masters” competition, where they try to re-create a board that was made by a shaping legend. This year they are trying to make a board like Renny Yater, a Santa Barbara shaper.

For those who have held onto surfing magazines, old trophies and surfboards, there will be the surfing version of the “Antique Roadshow,” where experts appraise the value of old surfing collectibles.

“We are asking people to look in their garage or houses and bring their old stuff out,” Bass said. “The idea is there are buried treasures in there.”

A host of other activities are planned, including surfboard demos, music and a trivia game.

Don't forget to stop by the Bubblegum Surf Wax booth to get some Rob Machado Organic Wax for your new board!

The $10 entrance fee also gets you a year’s subscription to Transworld Surf. The event is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

NSSA Hawaii Regionals

MARCH 23 2010

Results in for 2010 NSSA Hawaii Regional Championships March 23, 2010 PRESS RELEASE

On March 13, 2010, the first day of the Hawaii Regional Championships kicked off at Kewalo Basin. The competitors were greeted with contestable two foot surf and the day was blazing hot. The championships opened up on day one with the premier Open divisions. To no one's surprise, Isaiah Moniz was tearing it up and made 2 finals in the Open Men's and Juniors divisions. Unfortunately he just came short of victory in both divisions with an impressive double runner-up showing. Tanner Hendrickson was sizzling hot taking total command with a three-division sweep in Open Men's, Explorer Men's and Explorer Juniors. Tanner has had one sensational season taking conference titles in Open and Explorer Men's and surely made a statement in his graduating season with NSSA. Look for Tanner to bring his "A" game to the Nationals! Lahiki Minamishin led the charge in the hotly contested Junior's category taking the win. Wyatt McHale ripped his way to his first Regional victory in the Open Mini Grom division. On day two, the competition grew more intense and we had some serious performance highlights in the heats. The judges threw Seth Moniz a perfect 10 score in the Open Boys final. Seth was on a mission taking the victory in the Explorer Menehuene as well. Kaulana Apo, who posted an excellent 9.5 score, shredded to a runner-up placing in the Open Boys and third in the Explorer Menehuene. Cayla Moore, younger sister of 11-time National Champion Carissa Moore, made two finals in Explorer Womens and Girls. Carissa was on the beach cheering on her little sister. Looks like another Moore could be making noise at the Nationals this June! In the Open Womens, Tatiana Weston Webb was ripping and claimed her first major NSSA title in the Open Womens.

A huge thanks goes out to all of the NSSA Hawaii surfers, coaches and parents. Also many thanks to the NSSA staff, judges, Aunty Miko, Aunty Amy, Aunty Laura and Aunty Lauren.

The NSSA Hawaii Regional Championships was sponsored by RVCA, Vans, Xcel, Wahoo's, Jason Nalu Bogle, Kalani Robb, Surfco, Honu Group, Rockwell watches and ASP Hawaii.
